"On n'est pas dans le futurisme, mais dans un drame bourgeois ou un thriller atmosphérique"
Hanged at Lincoln gathers together the stories of criminals hanged at both Lincoln Castle Prison and HMP Lincoln on Greetwell Road between 1716 and 1961. The condemned feature here range from coiners and forgers to thieves, highwaymen and poisoners. Among the infamous murderers executed at Lincoln include Richard Insole, executed in 1887 for the murder of his wife; child-killer Frederick Nodder, hanged in 1937; and Herbert Leonard Mills, who failed to commit the perfect murder and was hanged in 1951 by Albert Pierrepoint. Infamous executioners also played a part in the gaol's history. Thomas Askern hanged Pricilla Biggadyke at Lincoln in 1868, the first private female hanging (she was later found to have been innocent and was pardoned), while at the age of 54, William Marwood persuaded the governor of Lincoln Prison to allow him to conduct an execution. The efficient way in which he conducted the hanging of William Frederick Harry in 1872 assisted him in being appointed hangman by the Sheriffs of London and Middlesex.
